How does the theory exam go down?
When you take your theory exam, make sure you arrive at the examination centre a quarter of an hour beforehand. It is very important that you bring a valid ID.
– You report to the exam centre at the reception desk.
– An employee of the examination centre will check your proof of identity. The clerk will then give you the number of your table where you will take the exam.
– In some examination centres you will also be given a key to a locker. You can store your things there, as mobile devices are not allowed in the examination room.
– You may then wait in the space provided. A staff member from the examination centre will call you in.
How does the theory exam work?
Your theory exam takes about 45 minutes. The examination proceeds as follows:
– First you will be explained by an employee of the examination centre.
– After this, your exam will start.
– You will be asked various multiple choice, yes/no or fill-in-the-blank questions.
– For each question, you see a particular traffic situation on a large TV monitor. You will have to think during these images that you are the driver of the car and what you would do in such a situation.
– The theory exam consists of two parts.
1. Hazard recognition. You will be asked 25 questions on hazard recognition. You have 8 seconds to answer a question. This may seem short, but on the road you often have to decide even faster! You need to get 13 questions or more right from hazard recognition.
2. Traffic rules and traffic awareness. You get 30 questions on traffic rules and 10 questions on traffic insight. You have to get 35 questions or more right from traffic rules and traffic insight.
The results
After the exam, you will have to wait a while for the results. The staff member at the examination centre will tell you whether you have passed or failed. You will be given a form on which is written how many questions you got right and how many you got wrong. If you fail, this way you can better see where you need to pay more attention the next time you take the theory exam. If you pass, we will register it in our system. Once you have passed, the result is valid for 1.5 years. If you don’t pass the practical exam within that time, you have to retake the theory exam.
